In light of a dramatically changing security situation in Europe and personnel shortages in the Bundeswehr, the debate over conscription in Germany has reignited. Following its suspension in 2011, discussions are now underway regarding its reintroduction to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. A new military service model has been in effect since January 2026: All 18-year-old men must complete a questionnaire assessing their suitability, while participation is voluntary for women. Is a new form of compulsory military service a necessary step for national defense, or is it an outdated model that infringes too deeply on the civil liberties of young people? Should the Bundeswehr rely solely on a volunteer basis to recruit more personnel? Should a modern conscription system be gender-neutral, or should there be a general service obligation? The Peace Discussion will address these and other questions.

Admission is free. Registration for the event is not required.
