The Mühlenbäckerei in Schmilka, in Saxon Switzerland, stands for tradition and craftsmanship. As early as 2 a.m., the master baker fires up the traditional German wood-fired oven, and visitors can purchase fresh, wood-fired baked goods in the morning, including cakes as big as a wagon wheel. Best of all: everything is certified organic.
At the Schmilka Mill, you can experience craftsmanship that’s still very much alive! On a tour with the master baker, you’ll explore the working watermill and learn the secrets of the wood-fired oven. Afterward, be sure to sample the sweet and savory treats!

Traveling by car:
The wide-area detour goes via the Elbe bridges in Pirna.
Traveling by train:
Local S-Bahn station: Schmilka-Hirschmühle. There are frequent express train connections from Germany and even from Austria all the way to Bad Schandau (e.g., a direct connection from Berlin to Bad Schandau). From Bad Schandau, take the S-Bahn two stops to Schmilka, then cross over on the old “Lena,” the historic ferry from 1927, and you’re there! Author
