Lake Eixer See is a former gravel pond that was developed into a local recreation area after gravel mining ceased and was eventually opened for swimming. The lake was created in 1949 to extract material for filling underground cavities in the Peine mine. The sand extracted in this way was transported to the mine site and washed into the abandoned mining cavities.
Today, the lake to the north-west of the town of Peine is a popular meeting place for young and old. There is a light sandy beach and a restaurant on the southern shore. There is also a playground, a covered seating area and a volleyball court.
A DLRG lifeguard station ensures safety during the summer months.
