Haus des Gastes

The grounds on which the Haus des Gastes is located originally served as the farmyard of the former castle, which was known as the "Grünhof" and was used by the farmers to pay their taxes in kind. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the building served as the seat and residence of the royal Hanoverian bailiff. In 1885, the district administration was dissolved and the district judge moved into the bailiff's house together with the police. The offices of the district court were located in a half-timbered building to the right of the bailiff's house, as evidenced by the bell tower on the roof, which still exists today. Today, the building houses the registry office of the municipality of Amt Neuhaus.

During the winter of 1944/45 and in the spring of 1945, a military hospital and an emergency hospital were set up on the site of the former Grünhof. The hospital remained in the former bailiff's house until June 1992. In the 1990s, some rooms were temporarily used as primary school rooms until the primary school in Neuhaus was completed. Between 1999 and 2000, the historically valuable building was extensively renovated in line with conservation requirements and has served as a tourist information centre and event venue for locals and visitors since April 2000. The tourist information centre moved to Konau in summer 2021.

The "Amt Neuhaus Archaeological Centre" has also been housed in the Haus des Gastes since 2013 and has also been located in Konau since November 2022. Among other things, the library is currently located in the Haus des Gastes.
