Wöltingerode Monastery Estate – Monastery Complex and Distillery

Wöltingerode Monastery was founded almost 1,000 years ago. The estate comprises historic buildings, extensive woodland and the monastery church with its bell tower, visible from afar.
More than 330 years ago, the Cistercian nuns in Wöltingerode introduced the art of distilling. Fine wheat spirit was used to produce liqueurs, bitters and the ‘Kloster-Edelkorn’, a spirit aged in wooden casks. Today’s abbey distillery continues this distilling tradition.

Tour of the abbey distillery

During guided tours, visitors gain an insight into the distillery and learn about how the products are made. During a subsequent tasting session in the vault beneath the abbey church or in the abbey drying room, the history of the abbey and its governing body, the Klosterkammer Hannover, is also presented. Information on the guided tours is available by telephone and on the abbey estate’s website.
The monastery estate also includes the ‘Klosterkrug’ restaurant with a beer garden, a monastery hotel, the Lachscenter, the monastery church, a monastery apiary, a monastery herb garden and a fallow deer enclosure.
