After being commissioned by the city council in 1978, the Braunschweig artist Jürgen Weber worked for five years on the completion of the bronze portal for the council chamber of Göttingen's New Town Hall.

On the limited, almost square surface of two low door leaves, Weber used an elaborate casting process to create a high-contrast pictorial composition distributed over various relief thicknesses and spatial depths.
The theme, as well as its formal and motivic realization, was set by the artist himself: Interwoven with more than 500 human figures, Weber embeds the history of Göttingen - including the founding of the university - in the history of Central Europe.
