St Andrew’s Church in Tanna

Church
Tanna was first mentioned in documents in 1232.
The Teutonic Order became the patron of the church in Tanna and its belongings in 1279. This gift was confirmed by the Reeve of Gera in 1296. This made Tanna an independent commandery of the Teutonic Order. Tanna received its town rights in 1494. A start was made on rebuilding the church at about this time. The oldest preserved sculpture is located above the southern entrance to the church – a crucifixion group made of sandstone, which was created in the 15th century. The church was extensively renovated in Neo-Gothic style in 1898.
