The first church building in Lunsen was founded as early as 977 - initially made of wood. Five mounted monks were responsible for their "flocks" in the surrounding area at the time. In the 14th century, the second church in Lunsen - a half-timbered building - was erected. In the meantime, daughter parishes and chapels were founded from here in Blender and Thedinghausen, among other places. The Reformation arrived in Lunsen in 1563; the church was plundered during the Thirty Years' War and subsequently passed into Swedish hands.
In 1873, the second nave had to be demolished due to dilapidation. The tower, which was supposed to be preserved, collapsed the following year, making it necessary to completely rebuild the church. The current third church building in Lunsen was consecrated in 1877. Only one pillar remains from the previous church, which today serves as a baptismal font. There is also a piece of bone in the wall of the sacristy from these old times - possibly a relic of the patron saints Cosmas and Damian.
The stained glass windows in the chancel are by G.H. Rohde from Bremen and were installed in 1928. The organ was completely rebuilt in 1971. The church and organ were extensively renovated and restored in 2002 and 2003. For example, the "old" interior painting was restored and the crucifix from 1933 was relocated so that the cross without the corpus from 1877 could once again find its place above the altar. The acoustics of Luns Church are famous; for example, radio and CD recordings and concerts are regularly held here.
