St.-Johannis-Kirche Lüchow

Church

Nothing is known today about the origins of St. John's Church. However, its location on the church island surrounded by the arms of the River Jeetzel remains special to this day.

The exact age of St. John's Church in Lüchow can no longer be traced today. According to records, there is said to have been a Christian church in Lüchow as early as 1298.

The oldest pictorial representation of St. John's Church dates back to the middle of the 17th century. Even then, the church did not have a steeple, which is extremely unusual. Instead, a small tower called a "ridge turret" was placed in the middle of the roof ridge. The reason for this structural peculiarity is thought to be structural uncertainty. Placed on the "church island" surrounded by the arms of the Jeetzel river, the ground would probably not have been able to withstand the loads. The fact that St. John's Church stood outside the city walls is also the reason why it survived the devastating fire of 1811, in which almost the entire rest of the city was reduced to rubble, unscathed.
