Situated in the middle of the village, St. Mary's Church has shaped the townscape of Plate for over 700 years. The tower, which can be seen from afar, has become the village's landmark. St. Mary's Church is an unusually large three-aisled brick building for a village church.

The origins of Plater Church date back to the 13th century. The nave, with its mighty walls and round arches, is originally Romanesque in style. The ground plan in the shape of a horizontal cross and towerless building suggests that it was founded by Cistercians.

According to legend, the lord of the manor of Plato lost his way while hunting, found an image of the Virgin Mary on the spot where the church now stands and vowed to build a church there in honor of the Virgin Mary.

As one of the few patronage churches, its walls span the arc from history to the present day.

From 1370, the church is extended in the Gothic style. The tower with two bells is erected, the side aisles are extended and the Gothic star vault is created.
