St. Nikolai-Kirche Altenbruch

Church

St. Nicolai Church in Altenbruch is one of the oldest and largest churches in Cuxhaven.

The church in the main town of the Hadler Land region is named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors.

The single-nave fieldstone church, featuring a barrel vault and twin towers, was built on a flat hill. The twin towers also served as a prominent landmark for seafarers. This is evident from the fact that they are clearly highlighted on all old land and sea maps. The solidly built tower splits into two separate towers above the roof ridge of the main building; these are popularly known as “Anna” and “Beate,” are covered with copper, and stand 45 meters tall.
