St Wolfgang’s Chapel in Schleiz

You do not immediately recognise the small rectangular structure as a sacred building. The little church has been modified on several occasions – most recently in 1750, 1820 and 1911. What is immediately striking is the rich inscription work on the outsides. Most of them were probably put in place in the early 16th century. There is a Latin inscription over the door, which, when translated, says: “Look here, O mortal man, where else were there such sufferings? Look here, pilgrim, the momentary onlooker is a sinner.” There is a cross belonging to a knight’s order on the eastern gable of the chapel and under it a relief, which shows Christ under the cross. The Mary window dating back to 1490 is also noteworthy. St Wolfgang’s Chapel can be easily combined with a walk from the hill church.
