Cozy lakeside path around the Falkenstein reservoir with options for dining, resting, and playing.

You hike clockwise around the Falkenstein reservoir. This allows you to overcome most of the inclines on asphalted ground. The length of the hike is 2.3 km and 30 meters of elevation gain and loss must be overcome.

The Falkenstein reservoir was built from 1971 to 1975 for industrial water supply. The official commissioning was in 1977. The disappearance of industry has led to the reservoir today being used primarily by citizens of the surrounding villages for recreation and as a swimming water. The dam of the reservoir is a rockfill dam with an inner concrete sealing. It dams the Weiße Göltzsch.

Directions

The first meters are covered on the road on the left side of the reservoir, which is closed to public traffic. This section goes uphill and may require pushing assistance. After about 300 m, we turn right towards the reservoir. This section goes 100 m downhill on a sand-washed gravel surface. From now on, we follow the lakeside path to the end of the reservoir. The ground is a heavily compacted sandy surface. After rainfall, puddles and softened ground are to be expected on this section. At the far end of the reservoir, we pass through the playground there and hike back on the other side of the reservoir to the parking lot. The return path is asphalted. The dam crest itself is paved.

Hikers who want a longer and more demanding route can follow the marked hiking trail to the Rißfälle at the end of the reservoir. The signage is a green stripe, from Druckersmühle a yellow stripe on a white background. The route is about 4 km long and constantly goes uphill. Strong assistance is required for wheelchair users. But the absolute silence and the wonderful forest air compensate the hiker for the effort. Unfortunately, wheelchair users cannot see much of the Rißfälle themselves (topography).

Directions & Parking facilities

We recommend traveling by car. Disabled parking spaces are located at the dam crest. Using the parking spaces below the reservoir requires overcoming a fairly steep incline to the dam crest, as shown in the elevation profile.
