The cultural landscape of Moritzburg is a paradise for cyclists. A special feature of this cultural landscape are the so-called Himmelsteiche (sky ponds) created since 1480 and Moritzburg hunting lodge. Nestled in an idyllic small-hill and forest landscape, the Himmelsteiche are fed exclusively with rainwater "from the sky" and meltwater after winter. The bike route runs through almost flat terrain on forest paths and side roads and is easy to ride.

The start and finish of the rideable route is the station of the Lößnitzgrundbahn in Moritzburg. Several times a day, the steam train known as the "Lößnitzdackel" stops here. From here, follow the marking sign of the "Fischer-Route" along Bahnhofstraße, over the old horse market into the historic part of Moritzburg. Here the first gastronomic stop is worthwhile at Adams Gasthof - the historic inn offers a great beer garden with its own pond in the backyard.

After continuing, you will see the large castle pond and Moritzburg's most famous landmark, the baroque hunting lodge - a must for photos. On the left along Meißner Straße, the next stop worth visiting is the Käthe Kollwitz House, which features a permanent exhibition about one of the most famous German female artists of the 20th century for interested guests.

Continue along the castle pond until the route leads for the first time into Friedewald - Moritzburg is surrounded by wonderful forests, offering many well-ridable paths. The Fischer-Route leads to the idyllic old ponds, which invite for a break and nature observation with a wooden rest house. This is also possible later on the route at Frauenteich, where there is a bird-watching spot to view the animals of the adjacent bird protection area.

Then the route skirts the Moritzburg game reserve. Those who turn right from the path here go directly to the entrance of the area, where many native wild animals can be seen, from fallow deer to wolves.

The next tour highlight is the Moritzburg large pond. Here stands Saxony's only historic lighthouse, which in the 18th century served as a backdrop for the imitation of sea battles. A gem is also the pheasant lodge opposite. Right next to it is an opportunity for the next culinary refreshment: both the café at the lodge and the inn directly by the lake offer this. Also, the former house of Count Marcolini next to the pheasant lodge is always worth a visit.

Afterwards, the route leads over the dam path straight through the large pond to further pond systems at the edge of the Moritzburg forests. To the delight of young guests, the adventure plantation can now be reached, which in summer can impress with a berry café and a natural playground. Opposite is the Bad Sonnenland holiday park, where campgrounds and, for example, canoes are available to explore the adjacent Dippelsdorfer Teich from the water.

At this pond is also the "Red House", a former bathhouse that already inspired the "Artists' Bridge" in the early 20th century. The following bike street leads along Dippelsdorfer Teich to a small hill where one can enjoy views over the small hill landscape around Moritzburg. From here it is only a few minutes cycling back to the starting point, where once again the old town center of Moritzburg with village pond is crossed.

Directions

The bike route starts and ends at the train station in Moritzburg. The route initially follows Bahnhofstraße and shortly after reaches Schlossallee, which is crossed diagonally to then travel over the former horse market.

Afterwards, the route turns left and continues straight ahead to the castle pond directly at Moritzburg Castle. At the castle pond, the route turns left and follows Meißner Straße to the next intersection where it turns right. At the end of the castle pond, a forest path leads left into Friedewald toward the Auer district. After Griesberg, turn right and head towards the old ponds.

Now continue straight along the forest path until you reach a small hill on the field path. Here, turn right to head back towards Moritzburg. At the middle pond, the route turns left again into the forest. Follow this path, cross the main street, and continue straight past the game reserve until you reach the pheasant lodge.

After this, continue a few meters straight ahead, then turn right and cross the dam path over the large pond, following the paths to Cunnertswalde and finally to the hunter's pond. Keep left here and ride 2 km to the forest ponds. Continue to follow the signs to cross the main street and keep left at Bad Sonnenland.

In Friedewald, the path leads to the right over the bike street around Dippelsdorfer Teich to the small hill. Then continue straight into the former old town center of Moritzburg. Pass the village pond and keep right to cross Schlossallee in Moritzburg again and finally return to the starting point.
