Hike through the Trieb and Elster valley to the Elster valley bridge over the Julius-Mosen tower with fascinating views of the Pöhl Dam back to the dam wall.

On this hike, you can discover the beauty of the untouched natural landscape of the low mountain range Vogtland from the Pöhl Dam. The area is characterized by its impressive rock formations and its diverse flora and fauna. It is no coincidence that the term "Vogtland Switzerland" was coined for this region.

First, you will cross the nature reserve Trieb valley/Eisenberg, which impresses with moss-covered rocks in the stream and roaring waterfalls. Then continue to the Elster valley bridge, the second largest brick bridge in the world. Through the Elster valley, you hike past the Lochbauer via Eisenberg back to the starting point. At the end of the tour, you will find another highlight: the 14m high Julius-Mosen Tower with breathtaking views.

Directions

The hike starts at the dam wall of the Pöhl Dam. Coming from Möschnitz, turn left into the Trieb valley just before the dam wall. After about 200m, you reach the first junction, where you keep right. Now you hike on a natural hiking trail for about 250m until you reach the Trieb stream. Now follow the path, crossing the Trieb valley with its wild waterfalls up to the Elster valley bridge. Here the Trieb flows into the White Elster. You hike about 1km further along the White Elster into the Elster valley. Arriving at the Elster valley bridge, you cross it until you turn left for a short distance onto a road to cross the river. Now you hike back on the other bank of the White Elster and cross the Elster valley bridge again (the Elster valley bridge can also be crossed on foot halfway up; please note the steep stair ascent and descent). You follow the Elster until you reach a large rock called the Devil's Pulpit. After about 1km, you hike a short distance along a little-used road to the Lochbauer - a guesthouse with a large beer garden that invites you to relax in the middle of idyllic nature. From Lochbauer, you cross the Elster over a wooden bridge and follow the hiking trail about 1 km to the main road. At the main road S297, you have two options to return to the starting point:

  1. Hike a short stretch along the main road, then immediately turn left into the forest. You follow the hiking trail about 1.5km uphill, passing the Könighübel to Eisenberg. Here you can take a detour up to the Julius-Mosen Tower and are rewarded with a fascinating view over the Pöhl Dam. After a short stretch, you return to the starting point - the dam wall.

  2. You can shorten the hike and cross the main road. Along the hiking and cycling path past the reception of the ****-Superior campsite Gunzenberg, you hike over the dam trail back to the dam wall of the Pöhl Dam.
