The historic Colditz Game Reserve was established in the 16th century as a game enclosure, expanded over about 100 years into a hunting ground and place of entertainment, and adorned with artistic architecture, making it one of the oldest and at the time most famous sites in the German region. Today, it invites visitors to extensive walks as a deciduous mixed forest. The start and end point of this route is Colditz Castle, one of the largest Renaissance castles in Saxony, notable for its eventful history — from the creation of the medieval castle complex to its prime as the hunting seat of Saxon electors. A visit is highly recommended.
