Hiking trail "Marinestadt Bremerhaven" 12km

At the entrance to the North Sea, the “Marinestadt Bremerhaven” hiking trail of the Friends of the Nijmegen Delegation runs over dikes and along the Weser. Hikers enjoy the wide views and fresh sea air. The port city, where over 250 square-rigged ships were once launched, is still closely connected to the sea and maritime activities today. Monuments of nearly two hundred years of port history line the path, where shipping, shipbuilding, fishing, and fish processing have a long tradition.

During the hike through the seaport city, there is plenty of maritime sights to see. On one hand, there are the Havenwelten, the city’s center, featuring the Klimahaus Bremerhaven, the German Emigration Center, the German Maritime Museum, the submarine “Wilhelm Bauer,” the Zoo by the Sea, and the New Harbor with traditional ships. At the Schaufenster Fischereihafen, the cradle of German deep-sea fishing, maritime restaurants, shops, and smokehouses are lined up. Just opposite, you can watch professional cooks in the fish cooking studio's pots, and next door at the Theater im Fischereihafen there are various high-quality performances. On the harbor basin in front, the museum ship “Gera” invites you to gain insight into the tough work of the fishermen. Along the route through Bremerhaven, hikers can also let their gaze wander over dikes, locks, and lighthouses.

The trail starts at the Klimahaus Bremerhaven with its impressive exterior facade. Inside, visitors embark on a journey around the globe, passing through the climate zones of our planet. The path along the dike next to the German Maritime Museum is short. A highlight in the exhibition inside is a cog ship from the year 1380. The path continues past the water level indicator and marina to the fishing harbor. The swing bridge over the Geestemünder main canal is crossed. It is the oldest movable bridge in Bremerhaven and an outstanding technical monument of the port city.

Bremerhaven is popular not only for its numerous sights, attractions, theaters, art museums, (harbor) tours, parks, and recreational areas but also for regularly held events. Particularly the maritime tall ship gatherings “Sail” and “Maritime Days,” followed by open-air music events, markets, and more.
