Hiking trail "Marinestadt Bremerhaven" 6km

At the entrance to the North Sea, the “Marinestadt Bremerhaven” hiking trail of the Friends of the Nijmegen Delegation leads over dikes and along the Weser. Hikers enjoy wide views and fresh sea air. The port city, which once saw over 250 square-rigged sailing ships launched, is still closely connected to the sea and shipping today. Monuments of its almost two-hundred-year-old harbor history line the path, where shipping, shipbuilding, fishing, and fish processing have a long tradition.

During the hike through the seaside city, there is plenty of maritime charm to see. Among them are the Havenwelten, the center of the city, with the Klimahaus Bremerhaven, the German Emigration Center, the German Maritime Museum, the submarine “Wilhelm Bauer”, the Zoo by the Sea, and the Neuer Hafen with traditional ships. In the Fischereihafen showcase, the cradle of German deep-sea fishing, maritime restaurants, shops, and smokehouses line up. Opposite, you can watch professional chefs at work in the fish cooking studio, and next door at the Theater im Fischereihafen, you can enjoy various top-class performances. In the harbor basin in front, the museum ship “Gera” invites you to gain insight into the hard work of fishermen. Along the route through Bremerhaven, hikers can also enjoy views over dikes, locks, and lighthouses.

The path starts at the Klimahaus Bremerhaven with its impressive exterior facade. Inside, visitors embark on a journey around the globe, crossing the climate zones of our planet. The path along the dike near the German Maritime Museum is short. A highlight inside the exhibition is a cog from the year 1380. The route continues past the water level indicator and yacht harbor to the Fischereihafen. The movable bridge over the Geestemünder main canal is crossed here. It is the oldest movable bridge in Bremerhaven and an outstanding technical monument of the harbor city.

Bremerhaven is popular not only for its numerous sights, attractions, theaters, art museums, harbor tours, and parks as well as recreation areas but also for regularly occurring events. Chief among them are the maritime windjammer meetings “Sail” and “Maritime Days,” followed by open-air music events, markets, and more.
