To the Imperial Crown and the Compass Stone (Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna)

A leisurely hike up the smallest table mountain in Saxon Switzerland. Caspar David Friedrich once wandered these hills. His“Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog” is arguably the best-known painting of the German Romantic period. It depicts a well-to-do hiker in a frock coat and with a walking stick, standing on a rock in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and gazing at a landscape of partly bizarrely shaped mountain peaks rising from billowing morning fog. The landscape depicted in the painting is Saxon Switzerland. For Friedrich, who spent most of his life in Dresden, the nearby rocky landscape was a place of longing, inspiration, and refuge in a world that had fallen apart.
