South of Lake Markkleeberg, Lake Störmthaler connects via a lock connection. The Mining Technology Park is visible from afar.

On the approximately 5.4 hectare open-pit mining typical site, a complete extraction cycle of an open-pit operation is presented authentically and understandably. The island VINETA, floating in the middle of the lake, recalls the places that had to give way to the lignite open-pit mining and can be visited by the VINETA ferry. The eastern section of the lake circular hiking trail also passes by the GEOPFARD at Lake Störmthaler.

Directions

The lake circular trail starts at the boat dock at Lake Markkleeberg and continues on the western side of the lock. Parallel to the Vineta path, it goes southwards and directly along the shore. At Röthaer Holz, the trail circles the southern arm of Lake Störmthaler and then along the eastern side of the lake northwards again. Passing the Vineta landing stage, the path leads to the harbor master and the holiday resort Lagovida. Then it goes around the Gruna Bay and continues further east between the lake and a small forest section. At the easternmost point of the lake, the path heads towards the village of Störmthal, from where there is a wonderful view of the Vineta. Upon reaching the north, it goes alongside the lock canal back to the starting point.
