Directions

Our first stop can be found in Nikolaivorstadt, specifically at the Municipal Cemetery. Here lies the tomb of the Lüders family. It is a place of remembrance for the life of Johann Christoph Lüders, who founded his saddler and varnisher workshop in Görlitz in 1827, where he manufactured coaches. Continue from Friedhofstraße, through the Ölberggarten, through the Schanze to Heilige-Grab-Straße. Follow the tram tracks to the Jägerkaserne. Behind the huge barracks building near the sports hall on Hugo-Keller-Straße you will find a bas-relief of the famous footballers Michael Ballack and Dixie Dörner.

Follow Hugo-Keller-Straße to the Nikolaiturm. Here you have two options: either take the steep direct route via Nikolaistraße or stroll comfortably through the green area of Nikolaizwinger. You will arrive at Peterskirche and enjoy the view of the Neisse. Now walk back a little to Hotel Tuchmacher. Here you enter Peterstraße 4 and admire the residence of Bartholomäus Scultetus. Passing through Untermarkt, past the town hall tower, you reach Brüderstraße. You are in the heart of the old town, recognizable by the impressive ensemble of architecture. At the beginning of Brüderstraße, opposite the town hall tower, stands the Schönhof. It is the oldest bourgeois Renaissance house in Germany and since 2006 it has been home to the Silesian Museum. Schönhof was built by the city works master Wendel Roßkopf after the city fire in 1525. Roßkopf is considered a pioneer of the early Renaissance, which is so plentifully represented in Görlitz.

Cross Brüderstraße and go via Obermarkt toward Kaisertrutz, which belongs to the Cultural History Museum. To the left of the building you will find a memorial to the city’s first mayor, Gottlob Ludwig Demiani. Now follow the tram tracks to Demianiplatz and head past the department store into Struvestraße. At the end of Struvestraße you will find our next stop, the monument to Johannes Wüsten, a German writer, painter, and graphic artist. Follow Joliot-Curie-Straße to Dr.-Kahlbaum-Allee; on your left is the Park des Friedens with the monument to Jakob Böhme. Jakob Böhme is probably the most famous son of the city. His theosophical writings found worldwide dissemination.

Breathe in the fresh air of the park.

Follow the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route toward Obermühle, past the Neisse Viaduct. Beyond the viaduct, follow a rather steep path to the Robert-Oettel monument, founder of German pedigree poultry breeding. In this park it is also worth taking a ride on the vintage park railway.

You can return to the old town again via the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route.
