The 950-year-old Görlitz, with 56,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Upper Lusatia. Spared from destruction in World War II, it forms an urban masterpiece with its almost 4,000 predominantly restored cultural and architectural monuments, unparalleled in Germany. Görlitz belongs to the Via Sacra because of the Holy Sepulchre from the 15th century. This complex, called the "Lusatian Jerusalem," which also includes the St. Peter and Paul Church, is a testament to medieval piety and landscape architecture of European significance. Also worth visiting are the elaborately restored Jewish synagogue and the many museums of the city. One should definitely not miss the walk over the old town bridge to the Polish part of the city.

Directions
A little off the original route of the Neiße Cycle Path, you can wonderfully cycle along the 960ha large Berzdorfer See, a former brown coal open-cast mine. In Hagenwerder, a huge bucket wheel excavator still testifies to this time.
A few kilometers away lies the next stop of the Via Sacra in the picturesque Neiße Valley: the Cistercian convent St. Marienthal, founded in 1234, with a convent church, garden of biblical plants, Calvary hill, historic sawmill with hydropower plant, the easternmost vineyard in Germany, as well as a forest adventure trail. You can even stay overnight in the guesthouses of the convent and, with some luck, have a conversation with one of the nuns.
In Hirschfelde, the lovingly renovated Pilgerhäusel - a listed half-timbered house - offers affordable accommodation for foot pilgrims. Here you will also be assisted during a visit to the former Johanniterkirche St. Peter and Paul from the year 1299.
