Mills were vital for the supply of flour. They existed in almost every village. Depending on the circumstances, water or wind power was used to operate the mill. It was only with the invention of the electric motor that the old mills became superfluous. However, like the railroad, they bear witness to a long-gone romanticism of a profession that is still talked about and dreamed of today. Mills were not only differentiated according to their type of drive and construction, but also according to their affiliation as castle, monastery or council mills. There was an obligation to grind and a mill peace. Superstition, legends and mythical creatures are associated with mills.
"Good luck" has been the miller's greeting since time immemorial. The miller's job was very varied, it was not just about grinding grain. The miller repaired the mill himself if necessary and took on carting services, usually with donkeys. There were not only grain mills, but also saw mills, paper mills, grinding mills, bone mills and many others. The great decline of the mills began with the increasing industrialization at the end of the 19th century. The old romanticism of the mills lives on to some extent in today's modern wind turbines.
Detailed information on the mill sites can be found at the marked points along the route.

Directions
In Ebersbach, take a short detour downstream, heading north to the Niedermühle mill and then back again, always along the Weißer Schöps. You largely follow the Schöpstal hiking trail marked "Grüner Strich" via Morgenseite and Kleine Seite. Unfortunately, the Mühlenhotel Girbigsdorf is closed. But there are still several millstones in the yard. Follow the Kleine Seite road, cross Girbigsdorfer Straße and continue along the Schöps. At the end of Girbigsdorf, change to Girbigsdorfer Straße S125 and do not cross the bridge at the entrance to Holtendorf, but stay on Mittelstraße. Here too, continue upstream along the Am Schöps road, but now the route heads west towards Markersdorf.
In Markersdorf, shortly after the Durocstein, the Schöps changes direction again to the south. The church mill stood just behind the junction until 2015. Here, only a millstone bears witness to its former location. A bench invites you to take a break. The path climbs steeply on the Kirchsteig and is restricted to 90 centimetres by a barrier. A detour to St. Michael's Church is a good idea. The tour now continues towards Friedersdorf.
If the tour is too long for you, you can shorten the tour in Friedersdorf by taking the S111 towards Kunnerwitz. In Kunnerwitz, the "Zur Windmühle" restaurant invites tired cyclists to take a break.
If you don't mind the kilometers in the saddle, follow the local road in Friedersdorf to the junction to Schönau Berzdorf. Friedersdorfer Straße takes you directly to Mittelmühle, where several millstones can still be found in the yard. From here, take the main road S128 past the Hutberg to Kiesdorf to the former Jäckel mill, which was located at Dorfstraße 59. The route climbs over an old concrete road between Quärgelberg and Knorrberg and crosses over into the Neiße valley to Leuba and the Apelt mill. From here, the route follows the Oder-Neisse cycle path back to Görlitz. In Hagenwerder, you have the choice of a short detour to the former water mill in Tauchritz or to the old mill in Radmeritz / Radomierzyce in Poland. Those with a thirst for coffee will not be disappointed in the mill café in Radmeritz. The alternative would be to end the excursion in the Obermühle with a home-brewed beer.
In just a few minutes, you can cycle north from the Obermühle along the Oder-Neisse cycle path back to the Vierradenmühle and reach your starting point.
