Welcome to the sundial village Taubenheim/Spree located in the beautiful Upper Lusatia.

The municipality of Sohland a.d. Spree consists of three villages closely connected.

A special feature in this connection is the village of Taubenheim/Spree. It is the sundial village of Upper Lusatia.

Currently, 53 wonderful - historic and modern - sundials can be experienced.

These sundials served in earlier times as timekeepers, showing the exact local time based on shadow-casting rods on the dials, and still do today.

On house walls, gables, and in gardens in various variants, shapes, and colors, the sundials provide information about the former inhabitants of the houses and tell small stories. Twelve of these sundials were lovingly created and restored by the local graphic artist Martin Hölzel, who is also called the "father of the sundials." Martin Hölzel lived from 1908 to 1994. He was the preserver and promoter of the tradition of sundials and creator of many new clocks in Taubenheim.

The path can be explored individually, by registration with a guided tour or even in a slideshow. On foot or by bike, every one of the alternative timekeepers can be reached; there are a few restrictions for cars.

The sundials naturally work best when the sun allows reading the time.

Directions

From the starting point of the path – Sohlander Str. 31 – with the granite stone clock surrounded by beautiful plantings, the visitor walks westward past sundials found on both sides of the path.

At the branch of Niederbrücke Street, proceed south. From Niederbrücke, turn left into Spreeweg. At a sharp angle, Am Bahndamm Street branches off, which you follow a bit under the railway track. Then turn right into Am Viebig Street, following it until you reach Albert-Schweitzer-Straße. Here turn left and at the end of the street turn right into Doktorberg, then immediately left into Neutaubenheimer Street, which crosses the railway tracks and leads left onto Am Bahnhof Street. Upon reaching Sohlander Street, immediately turn right into Zumpeweg, which leads into Oberdorfstraße. The path makes a wide curve over the Spree; the walker then turns left into Oppacher Weg. This street winds along the Spree and upon reaching Sohlander Street again, turn left and follow the street back to the starting point.
