The worth seeing remains of the city wall are evidence of the history of Görlitz. Even today it is possible to trace the course of the defensive ring.

In the Middle Ages a city usually was created in a way that it was possible to walk around the city in an hour. Great parts of the city wall of Görlitz have been preserved to this day. Walk along the former city wall and discover one of the oldest parts of the city.

During this tour you will see the St. Nicholas‘ Tower (Nikolaiturm) - the oldest fortification of the city, the Ochsenbastei - a small park inside the city wall or the Reichenbach Tower (Reichenbacher Turm), which is the highest tower of Görlitz. Nikolaizwinger and Ochsenbastei have been converted to beautiful green spaces and are accessible from April to October.

Further parts of the city wall were the Kaisertrutz - today the Museum of History and Culture or the Thick Tower (Dicker Turm) - part of the fortification since 1250.

The Finstertor is another very important part of the city wall because it is the only preserved city gate. It is located in the Nikolaivorstadt but not part of this tour.

Directions

Start your tour at the tram stop "Jägerkaserne" and walk along the Jägerkaserne following Hugo-Keller-Straße in the direction of St. Nicholas‘ Tower (Nikolaiturm). The entrance to the Nikolaizwinger is located at the St. Nicholas‘ Tower. Walk through the Nikolaizwinger and you will reach St. Peter's Church. From the city wall you will have a great view of the Old Town Bridge (Altstadtbrücke). Continue walking to the Old Town Bridge via the cobbled street and follow Uferstraße. Turn left and walk through the gate into the Ochsenbastei, which is a beautiful green space and a former part of the city wall, too.

Continue walking along Jacob-Böhme-Straße and Elisabethstraße towards the Thick Tower (Dicker Turm). Via "Am Museum" street walk to the Kaisertrutz and the Reichenbach Tower (Reichenbacher Turm).
