Meer bei Meerdorf (Toteis-Loch oder Söller)

On the country road between the villages of Meerdorf and Rüper, there is a relic from the last ice age on the northern side. During the past cold periods, an impressive inland glacier several hundred meters wide extended several times as far as southern Lower Saxony.

As a load, the glacier carried rock material in the ice and at the base and deposited it as ground or terminal moraines. Parallel to the edge of the ice, a mighty glacial valley was formed through which the meltwater could flow towards the North Sea. When the glacier retreated, it left behind large chunks of ice because the ice mass thawed from the crevasses to the base and broke into pieces.

After the ice melted away, distinctive, often circular depressions, the so-called "Sölle" (singular: "Soll") or dead ice holes were left behind.

A fine, water-tight mud was deposited at the bottom of these holes, giving rise to the typical small bodies of water formed during the Ice Age.
