St Mary's Church in Winsen (Luhe) attracts many visitors with its impressive architecture and rich history. Before the current church was built, another church building stood on the same site in the 13th century. The first mention of the church in Winsen dates back to 1233.
The current St Mary's Church, a late Gothic hall church, began to be built around 1415. The single side aisle and the 63 metre high, hexagonal, neo-Gothic church tower are particularly striking. This tower, through which the Kirchstraße runs, characterises the townscape.
The Protestant-Lutheran St. Mary's parish looks after the inhabitants of the town centre and the surrounding villages of Hoopte, Stöckte, Gehrden, Laßrönne and Tönnhausen.
