St. Michaeliskirche Schnega

Church
Originally erected in the 12th century as a boulder building, St. Michael's Church was rebuilt in the 20th century in Art Nouveau style. It is considered one of the most beautiful village churches in Lower Saxony.

St. Michael's Church in Schnega, in the center of Swinmark, was probably originally built at the end of the 12th century. At that time, it was still a typical fieldstone building with a beamed ceiling.

When it was extensively rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, the church was also given three decorative stepped gables and is considered one of the most beautiful village churches in Lower Saxony.

The interior of the church is also magnificently decorated. Particularly noteworthy is the three-part, detailed carved altar from the 15th century. The choir surrounding the altar is also richly decorated and its vaulted ceiling is adorned with intricate plant ornaments.

The wooden ceiling of the rest of the church is also richly painted with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Other historical furnishings worth seeing include the richly decorated pulpit lid and various chandeliers.
