Pilgrims on the North Sea

The word pilgrim comes from the Latin - "peregrinus". Classically, it means stranger. Being a pilgrim means first and foremost being a stranger, and the pilgrimage is therefore a journey into the unknown and unfamiliar. Getting a little closer to God. Pilgrimages have exerted a great fascination for many centuries. Going on a pilgrimage means reflecting on the basics of being human. The medieval pilgrim set out with the hope of coming closer to God at the holy destination. So the story goes. Wangerland on the North Sea invites pilgrims to set out on the Wangerland pilgrimage route. In the villages and towns of Hohenkirchen, Hooksiel, Minsen, Middoge, Oldorf, Pakens, Schillig, St. Joost, Waddewarden, Westrum, Tettens, Wiarden and Wüppels, you will come across a multitude of beautiful churches. They are all testimonies to the faith and culture that have shaped Wangerland. In times gone by, people also sought shelter in them from enemy attacks and the violence of the water. To this day, they gather here to worship and seek comfort and guidance at turning points in their lives.

The churches are open to everyone. You can linger here for a time of silence and prayer or even talk to the people you meet. In all churches you will find pilgrim's passports to take away and a map to help you find your way around. You can record which of the churches you have already visited in your pilgrim's passport with a stamp that records the special feature of the respective church.

There is also a lot on offer for vacationers. Many parishes offer concerts, exhibitions and special church services during the summer. Everyone is welcome to attend! Also recommended, even for people who perhaps don't go to church that often, is a long and good tradition up here: the work with vacation guests at the campsites in Hooksiel and Schillig. Here, "Kirche unterwegs" offers a varied program for the whole family.
