An exciting bike route through the green and culturally diverse western part of Leipzig as well as the well-known trendy district of Plagwitz.

This bike route is perfect for a short city round for families, culture enthusiasts and anyone who wants to explore Leipzig's west by bike. The route connects green parks, historic sights and vibrant trendy districts.

Starting in the city center, the route passes the Old Town Hall and the St. Thomas Church, continues through the well-known Clara Zetkin Park along the White Elster river towards the west. In the popular trendy district of Plagwitz, cyclists encounter a special mix of industrial culture and creative scene. Karl-Heine Street is considered the heart of the district with a great selection of restaurants and cultural spots. The many canals, especially the Karl-Heine Canal, have earned Leipzig the nickname "Little Venice". Besides canoe trips and excursion boats, real Venetian gondolas glide through the water here. Anyone who wants to can set off on a small boat trip anytime.

Directions

The bike route starts in the center of Leipzig at the Tourist Information on Katharinenstraße 8. Passing the market, the old town hall, and the St. Thomas Church, one reaches the Dittrichring. Then proceed towards the New Town Hall. From there, the path continues through Johannapark over the Sachsenbrücke to Klingerweg. Then follow Könneritzstraße for quite a stretch and then Industriestraße along the White Elster river. At the roundabout, take the first exit and pass the Karl-Heine Canal. Follow Erich-Zeigner-Allee and turn left at the intersection with Karl-Heine Street, passing the Felsenkeller. Then follow Karl-Heine Street to Westwerk and before the bridge turn right onto a narrow pedestrian and bicycle path. Passing the stone steps, follow the canal up to Saalfelderstraße. Then cross the canal again, keep right and pass the Old Cotton Spinning Mill. At Plagwitz Cemetery, continue over Antonienbrücke. After crossing the bridge, turn left and follow the railway crossing to Naumburger Straße. After crossing the canal again, continue on the Elster-Saale bike route to the Museum of Printing Art. After the next bridge, return to Klingerweg. From there, go straight ahead to Scheibenholz Racecourse. At the Glasshouse, the route leads back onto Anton-Bruckner-Allee. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Beethovenstraße, then turn left. Passing the New Town Hall via Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz to Leipzig University at Augustusplatz.

Thanks to the proximity to the highways A9, A14, and A38, Leipzig is ideally connected to the nationwide highway network. You can reach the city center via the following exits:

  • From the direction of Berlin via A9 and A14, exit Leipzig-Mitte
  • From the direction of Dresden via A14, exit Leipzig-Ost
  • From the direction of Munich and Erfurt via A38, exit Leipzig-Southwest

Use the surrounding parking garages of the inner city ring.

The Tourist Information (starting point of the route) is only a few minutes’ walk from the stops Leipzig Markt (3 min), Goerdelerring (6 min), Leipzig Central Station (8 min), and Augustusplatz (10 min).
