Experience the Saargau in a different way. The hiking trail does not run over the heights of the Gau between Saarland and Lorraine but mostly over narrow forest paths through shady acacia woods. In the deep forest, you will find the "Three Capuchins," a well-known Gallo-Roman rock relief carved into Bundsandstein sandstone. The view from Teufelsburg into the Saar valley is unique.

Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban - born in 1633, the marquis became world-famous as the legendary fortress builder of the Sun King Louis XIV and is rightly regarded today as the most important military architect of the Baroque period. One of his masterpieces: the sophisticated flood fortress Saarlouis in the Saar floodplain.
Its history begins on the Saarlouiser Gau, on whose steep slopes, starting in 1680, the mighty stone blocks for the later fortress town were quarried between Teufelsburg and Humburg.
Over the centuries, these former quarries have become small natural jewels - forgotten, overgrown, enchanted.
The Saarlouis Vauban Trail now opens them up anew, combining the seemingly endless expanse of the German-French Gau landscape high above the Saar valley with an attractive route guidance and directing the hiker’s gaze to an interesting epoch of history.

The trail was rated with 70 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.
