If you follow the Friesenroute from Aurich along the Ems-Jade Canal – attention, near Marcardsmoor turn off to the Nordgeorgsfehn Canal –, you will soon reach the most beautiful “flowerbed of Lower Saxony”.
This refers to the municipality of Wiesmoor, which is situated in the middle of a magnificent moor landscape and is a true crowd-puller with its nurseries, tree nurseries, the flower hall, and the Ottermeer moor outdoor pool. Especially the annual blossom festival with flower procession is very popular.
Get to know the “5-mill-country” Großefehn, which the Friesenroute crosses on its way. The 14 villages of the municipality invite you in with their windmills and numerous canals, which can be crossed with the help of picturesque white drawbridges. Worth-seeing old churches as well as restored Gulf farms form an attractive contrast to the modern recreational area “Timmeler Meer”, an inland lake with a sandy beach that attracts both water rats and leisure captains alike.
