Directions
- More than 40 significant windmills, historic buildings, cultural sights, and of course plenty of characteristic local idyll – that is what the Frisian Mill Route is all about. The circular route is just under 250 kilometers long and – as its name suggests – leads along the Lower Saxony North Sea coast from one mill to the next. In daily stages between 40 and 55 kilometers, you travel on the most beautiful cycling paths in the region directly along the dike, through untouched moorlands, at the foot of dreamy fen canals, or sometimes relaxed through towns and cities on a (mill) route with your bicycle. From the lively seaport town of Emden, the route leads via the fishing village of Greetsiel and the coastal towns of Norden, Dornum, and Esens on idyllic paths to Aurich, the "secret" capital of East Frisia, and from there back to Emden. There is much to discover along the way: primarily of course the gallery smock, post, flutter, and tower mills, but also well-known lighthouses, old churches, castles, and many other historical witnesses of East Frisian history are to be found along the way. Often, however, it is the small things that attract great attention: the spicy sea air, the plant world along the path, or simply the silence amid untouched nature make the Mill Route a cycling experience of a very special kind. And to ensure no one loses their way, the route is not only excellently signposted, but tourists are also provided with detailed information material and a bicycle map – even with GPS on request. The Frisian Mill Route can be booked as a 4-day short trip with overnight stays in Norden, Emden, and Aurich, as well as in a more detailed version with further stops in Greetsiel, Esens, and Großefehn. To ensure visitors can enjoy their holiday from the first second and comfortably pedal away, a luggage transfer from hotel to hotel can also be booked.
