Directions
- We start at the St. Nicolaikirche, built in 1842, which after the redesign of the marketplace at that time was built with the altar facing west. The marking is the blue horizontal bar combined with the Vogtland Panoramaweg logo. Passing the town hall, the route leads over Lutherplatz, which served as a cemetery from 1588 to 1873, to the settlement at the fountain. Through the allotment garden area, we come to the B283 bypass road. After crossing carefully, we hike through the idyllic Poetenwald, named after the poet Julius Mosen (Andreas Hofer Song) who lived in Markneukirchen for a long time, to the connecting road Markneukirchen – Breitenfeld. The marking remains the blue horizontal bar, which takes us past the Breitenfeld outdoor swimming pool, a short ascent, down to Hirschmühlenteich. Slowly ascending along the valley floor, we go to the “Kleiner Schwarzer Teich”, then up to the houses of Friebus. Here we cross the busy federal road B283 again and after a rest with wide views, we hike to the small settlement Wacholderbusch. Above the Ziegenlohbachtal, we switch to the yellow marking, but the VPW logo remains with us. Staying on the heights, the route goes over Mittelberg to Spornreuth, a former execution site. An information board explains the bloody history of this forest section. Along a wonderfully natural path, we come down to Erlbach, the center of the air spa town. The central hiking signpost is opposite the Tauscher inn and the savings bank. We now follow (without the VPW logo) the green marking and walk to Lindenplatz. A few meters uphill from the square, we turn right into Badesteig (unmarked). Always in the valley floor, past the swimming pool, sports facilities and the music hall, we reach the starting point of our hike, the marketplace of Markneukirchen.
