Old town idyll, history and panoramic views around Schwarzenberg

This scenic tour begins at the historic Herrenhof Erlahammer, a lovingly restored half-timbered complex that not only impresses with its architecture but is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Montanregion Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří. The small exhibition on site offers fascinating insights into the industrial and cultural past of the region, making it a perfect start for a hike with depth.

The path leads uphill on the Wanderbarer Silberberg through open meadows, golden fields, and shady woodland sections. Those who occasionally turn around will be rewarded with fantastic views over the valley and the surrounding ridges – the panorama expands with every step. Once at the summit, hikers are treated to a quiet moment with a wide view. Pure Ore Mountains.

Over meadows and fields it continues to Pöhla. Here the ski jump stands as a striking symbol of winter sports in the region. Shortly afterwards, a idyllic pond with seating invites you to rest and enjoy. Perfect to just let your soul dangle.

From here, the trail follows the European long-distance path E3. It goes through the village and uphill again on a little-used road, always accompanied by views over the forested hills of the Ore Mountains. Over open meadows with fascinating wide views, the path approaches the town of Schwarzenberg.

Shortly before the town center, a detour to the Ottenstein offers a magnificent view of the roofs and alleys of Schwarzenberg. Those choosing the direct path ascend via the Schlossberg to Schwarzenberg Castle and into the historic old town. Half-timbered houses, cobbled alleys, and cafés invite exploration – be sure to allow enough time!

From there the E3 continues to the Waldbühne Schwarzenberg – one of Germany’s most beautiful natural amphitheaters – and along the Schwarzwasser valley back to Herrenhof Erlahammer.

Directions

Start at Herrenhof Erlahammer and walk along the main street towards the town. From here, always follow the signs for "Wanderbarer Silberberg". Turn right and walk past the apartment blocks and through a garden area. Then the path leads through a small woodland uphill. Keep left and follow the path over fields to some trees. Hold right there, then immediately turn left uphill and continue over the fields to the road. At the road, hikers turn left and immediately right again onto the stone rampart. Follow the path uphill until you reach the top. At the next junction, keep right to a road. Follow this road about 100 meters downhill to the left, then turn right onto the meadow. Follow the path to the forest edge, keep left there and after a short time follow the signpost right into the forest.

At the bottom, the ski jump awaits opposite. Behind the jump, the path curves back to the road, which you follow right through the village until stairs lead down on the right. A few meters further is the football pitch, where you turn left and leave the "Wanderbarer Silberberg". On the main street, keep left and now follow the markings of the European long-distance path E3.

Walk uphill on the road that curves to the right and continue until the E3 branches off to the right above a viewpoint bench. Follow this path through fields with wide views, always further, until it meets a road. Turn right there and immediately leave the road to the left again. Keep following the path until it meets a road again after some time. Follow this to the left and just after the river take two left turns again. Stay on the right riverbank and climb up to the castle. After visiting the castle, turn left to go through the old town to the market. Here keep left again and continue on the E3. After the houses, hikers turn right. The path runs along a small stream. Go left onto Bermsgrüner Straße and after a few hundred meters left again to the street "Am Rockelmann". Shortly afterwards you reach the Waldbühne in Schwarzenberg. Leave the Waldbühne at the bottom to the right and walk downhill through a allotment garden area. In the valley, turn right onto Kirchsteig, so that shortly you encounter Gießereistraße. Always keep left and finally cross the tracks and the river. Straight ahead onto Crandorfer Straße and then left Am Rothenberg downhill again. After a few meters, hikers reach the starting point at Erlahammer on the right.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The Perla Castrum Museum in Schwarzenberg Castle offers interesting insights into the history of the town, including the period after World War II when the place was "forgotten" and thus remained unoccupied for several weeks.

Safety guidelines

The route includes two steep climbs as well as a section shortly before Pöhla that requires sure-footedness. Only hike on this trail if you feel confident.
