A challenging bike route with tourist destinations and various photo stops on the topic of mills.

Mills were vital for supplying flour. They existed in almost every town. Depending on conditions, water or wind power was used to operate the mill. Only with the invention of the electric motor did the old mills become obsolete. Yet, much like the railway, they testify to a long-past romance of a profession that is still spoken of and dreamed about today. Mills were distinguished not only by their type of drive and construction but also by their affiliation as castle, monastery, or council mills. There was a milling obligation and mill peace. Superstition, legends, and mythical creatures are connected with mills.
"Good luck" has been the miller’s greeting for ages. The miller’s job was very versatile, not only grinding grain. The miller repaired the mill when necessary, took on transport services, mostly with donkeys. There were not only grain mills but also sawmills, paper mills, grinding mills, bone mills, and several others. The great decline of the mills began with increasing industrialization at the end of the 19th century. In today’s modern wind turbines, the old mill romance lives on to some extent.

Detailed information about the mill locations is available at the marked points along the route.

Directions

The route starts at the Vierraden Mill right next to the Görlitz Old Town Bridge and leads via Rothenburger Landstraße and Neißetalstraße northwards to Ludwigsdorf to the Art Mill. From there it goes back to the Klingewalde Settlement junction. You follow the main street through the town center to the western edge where once stood a windmill. On Klingewalder Weg you cross the railway line to Cottbus. At the federal road B115, turn right and stay on the cycle path until the Hornbach intersection to reach Ebersbach behind the former brickworks into the romantic Schöpstal.
In Ebersbach, take a short detour downstream, northwards to the Lower Mill and then back again, always along the White Schöps. You mostly follow the Schöpstal hiking trail marked with the "Green Line" via Morgenseite and Kleine Seite. Unfortunately, the Girbigsdorf Mill Hotel is closed. But there are still several millstones on the farm. Follow the road Kleine Seite, cross Girbigsdorfer Straße and continue along the Schöps. At the town exit Girbigsdorf, change to Girbigsdorfer Straße S125 and at the town entrance to Holtendorf, do not cross the bridge but stay on Mittelstraße. Here also upstream along the street Am Schöps, but now the route runs westwards to Markersdorf.
In Markersdorf, shortly behind Durocstein, the Schöps changes direction south again. Just behind the junction until 2015 stood the Church Mill. Only a millstone remains as a witness of the former location. A bench invites you to take a break. On Kirchsteig the path rises steeply and is restricted to 90 centimeters width. A detour to the St. Michael’s Church is recommended. The route now continues towards Friedersdorf.
If the route is too long for you, there is the possibility to shorten it in Friedersdorf via S111 towards Kunnerwitz. In Kunnerwitz, the Inn "At the Windmill" invites tired cyclists to rest.
If the kilometers on the saddle are no problem, follow the town road in Friedersdorf to the junction to Schönau Berzdorf. Via Friedersdorfer Straße you reach directly the Middle Mill, on whose farm several millstones can still be found. From here it goes over the main road S128 past Hutberg to Kiesdorf to the former Jäckel Mill, which was located at Dorfstraße 59. The route climbs via an old concrete road between Quärgelberg and Knorrberg and leads over into the Neisse valley to Leuba to the Apelt Mill. From here the route follows the Oder-Neisse cycle path back to Görlitz. In Hagenwerder you have the choice for a short detour to the former water mill at Tauchritz or to the Old Mill in Radmeritz / Radomierzyce in Poland. Those feeling a thirst for coffee will not be disappointed in the mill café in Radmeritz. Alternatively, you can end the outing at the Upper Mill with a house-brewed beer.
In a few minutes you ride from the Upper Mill along the Oder-Neisse cycle path north back to the Vierraden Mill and reach your starting point.
